How to Become a Flight Attendant in South Africa

South Africa operates many major airlines and is always in need of highly qualified flight attendants, or cabin attendants as they're commonly called. What you need to do to become a flight attendant is straightforward: apply to the airline that interests you, make sure you fulfill their basic requirements, and score an interview to start training. Once you've been admitted to a program, only half of your application process is done, because you have to pass a 4 to 6 week rigorous training program to become a licensed flight attendant

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • grade 12 certificate, customer-service experience, flight-attendant training program, CAA license

      • 1Do research on the major airlines that hire flight attendants from South Africa. Decide whether you want to be based in South Africa, in which case you'd want to research flight attendant careers for South African based airlines. If you want to be overseas, research airlines that hire South African flight attendants, such as Emirates and Qatar airlines.

      • 2Go to your airline's website to learn the basic screening requirements for flight attendants. The South Africa-based Comair Limited, for example, requires that flight attendants be no taller than 1,6 m (5'11''), have South African nationality, and are at least 20 years old.

      • 3Note the educational and experience-related requirements for flight attendants in South Africa. For example, Conair requires its flight attendants to have at least two years of customer-service experience, as well as a grade 12 certificate (also called a matric).

      • 4Attend your job interview, if you have been selected for an interview. Expect to attend an interview session with as many as 200 other applicants. During your interview, you will complete not only an one-to-one interview with a recruiter but a group interview, during which you are evaluated for your interaction skills.

      • 5Wait for notification that you have been accepted into a flight attendant training program. If so, be proud of yourself because fewer than 10% of applicants are accepted into South African flight-attendant programs. Prepare to travel to your airline's flight training center to begin flight-attendant training.

      • 6Complete a rigorous, 4 to 6 week paid training program (known as a Safety & Emergencies Procedures program) at your airline's training center. Throughout this program, you will complete written exams as well as train on flights with a supervisor. You will be evaluated on your customer-service skills, first-aid skills, fire-fighting skills, swimming ability, and evacuation skills.

      • 7Receive your Civil Aviation Authorites (CAA) license after completing your program. You are now a licensed flight attendant and can start your career, albeit on a probationary basis (a 6 to 8 week period during which you will be evaluated by senior cabin-crew members)..

How to Become a Flight Attendant at Air France

In 2008 Air France, together with its partner KLM, employed over 14,000 flight attendants as part of its cabin crew. The Air France KLM group has its U.S. headquarters in New York City, and flies out of 13 U.S. cities. To be hired as a flight attendant at Air France you must be, among other things, comfortable and knowledgeable working in a cross-cultural environment, fluent in French, and fit the airline's height requirements.

    Instructions

      • 1Be extremely familiar with particular cultures where Air France has flights. According to the Air France website, the airline assigns flight attendants that are "fully familiar" with the customs and needs on particular routes. For instance on flights between Japan and Brazil, Air France assigns Japanese flight attendants. The same is true for flights between Brazil and France, where Brazilian flight attendants are aboard.

      • 2Display fluency in French as well as in another foreign language. Air France flies all around the globe, and its passengers are multi-cultural as well as multi-lingual. Being bi- or tri-lingual is something that Air France values in an employee.

      • 3Prepare an outstanding resume along with a cover letter highlighting your skills and qualifications. Air France does not have a generic or standard online application form. Instead, resumes and cover letters in Microsoft Word format must be e-mailed to the address you will find on the website. Be sure to include the job title, the location, and the job code in the subject line.

      • 4Complete your high school education. No airlines, including Air France, will hire you if you do not have at minimum a high school diploma or the equivalent. According to Cabin Crews, over half of all flight attendants hired have at least one year of college under their belt, and over a third have a college degree.

      • 5Measure yourself before applying. Flight attendants aboard most airlines, including Air France, require you to be between 5'3" and 6'1" (without shoes) to be able to maneuver easily within the cabin.

Air Canada and WestJet are Canada's two main passenger air carriers. There are other smaller airlines, such as Porter, for example, but your best chance of getting a job as a flight attendant probably are with with the larger airline companies. That is because these firms are more likely to be on the lookout for new talent. However, bear in mind that the airline industry is a fluctuating business and in 2010 continues to be affected by the global economic crisis. If you want to become a flight attendant, you are going to have to stand out. Expect a long uphill climb

    Instructions

      • 1Put relevant information in your résumé. Your most important asset will be to speak at least French and English, and you will stand out even more if you speak a third language, such as Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, or Mandarin. Priority is routinely given to candidates who are fluent in English and French, and you will be hard-pressed to even get a call for an interview if you only speak English.

      • 2Meet the other basic requirements. You must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid Canadian passport, have earned a high school diploma or its equivalent, able to obtain security clearance, be well groomed and personable.

      • 3Familiarize yourself with all aspects of the requirements of the job. The Air Canada Website includes useful information on they qualities expected of would-be flight attendants. It also provides information on the essential duties performed by flight attendants.

      • 4Search for flight attendant jobs on the Air Canada and Westjet Websites. On the Air Canada Website, look for the "careers" icon near the bottom of the home page. On the WestJet website, look for "About us" on the top menu bar, and then select "Great Jobs."

      • 5Send an application that shows off your enthusiasm for, and knowledge of, travel and customer service. Your resume also should showcase your skills and relevant experience, including a commitment to teamwork and safety.

      • 6Respond to a call for an interview by being as flexible as possible. If you are selected, arrange your schedule to be available to attend flight-attendant training classes.

      • 7Show up at the interview on time, well groomed and properly dressed. Be prepared to smile and show enthusiasm.

Flight attendants perform emergency medical procedures and assist passengers during emergencies. You can become a flight attendant rapidly if you put your heart into training and work hard

    Instructions

      • 1Fulfill the basic requirements to become a flight attendant. You must, for instance, have earned your high school diploma or GED. You must also meet a certain height requirement (no shorter than 5 feet and no taller than 6 feet 3 inches is the norm among most airlines). Some airlines require that you be older than 21. Of course, you must also be willing to relocate to the airline's home base.

      • 2Understand the job of a flight attendant. Many people apply to be flight attendants only to become disillusioned by the job's physical and emotional requirements, such as dealing with demanding customers and being called into work on days off. Impress your recruiters by your knowledge of what you'll need to do while on the job.

      • 3Apply online as an airline flight attendant to get considered quickly for a job. On your application, highlight any previous customer-service experience you have. Second only to a bachelor's degree, airline recruiters want flight attendants to have customer-service experience.

      • 4Work hard to achieve excellent scores on your exams once you start training. Most training programs administer exams about once every two days for their total duration. These exams test your knowledge of standard flight procedures, emergency procedures, customer-service procedures and so forth.

      • 5Pay attention during your observation flights. These flights usually take place on the weekend and involve training with an experienced flight attendant.

      • 6Study hard for your final exam. This exam usually takes place on a mock flight, during which an "emergency" takes place. You must follow flight protocol to handle the emergency. Your trainers will evaluate your performance. Once you pass this final exam, you have earned your certificate and can start your career.
